What Is the Weather Like in North Alabama?
Expect hot, humid summers and generally milder winters, with occasional cold snaps. Spring and fall offer a transition between those seasons. Conditions vary across North Alabama, so the Huntsville averages below are a local reference rather than figures for every community.

Winter: December Through February
Pack layers and a warm coat for winter visits. A mild afternoon does not rule out a freezing night. If you’re relocating from a warmer climate, ask about protecting exposed pipes and preparing your home for cold weather.
Spring: March Through May
Spring brings a steady warm-up, along with changeable weather. Keep a rain jacket handy and leave some flexibility in outdoor plans. It’s a season when checking the forecast matters more than relying on an average temperature.
Summer: June Through August
Summer afternoons are hot and humid. For sightseeing, yard work, or a neighborhood walk, consider an early start and plan breaks indoors. Pool access, shaded outdoor space, and a comfortable cooling system may be useful features to consider when comparing homes.
Fall: September Through November
Fall is one of our favorite times of year in Huntsville. September can still feel like summer, while later fall calls for layers. We enjoy this season for exploring neighborhoods, spending time outdoors, and getting to know the area.
Rain, Snow, and Ice
Huntsville’s annual precipitation normal is about 54.3 inches, and its annual snowfall normal is 2.4 inches. Those figures come from the 1991–2020 climate normals. Rain occurs throughout the year; December has the highest monthly precipitation normal. Snowfall varies considerably from winter to winter, so an average does not promise snow each year.
Check the forecast before winter travel, and be prepared to adjust plans when snow or ice is expected.
Tornadoes and Severe Weather
North Alabama’s primary tornado season is spring, including March, April, and May. November is another important period of activity. Tornadoes can occur outside those periods, so keep weather alerts available year-round. See the National Weather Service’s regional severe-weather climatology for historical context.
Before moving, identify where you would take shelter at home and learn how to receive local alerts. Use NWS Huntsville for current forecasts, watches, and warnings.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Huntsville?
For our preferences, spring and fall are good starting points for planning a visit. If you’re considering a move, a summer or winter trip can also help you decide how comfortable you feel during the hotter or colder months. Build your itinerary around the forecast rather than expecting every day in a particular season to feel the same.
