DIY Guide to Get Your Home Ready to Sell

Originally published June 2020 · Updated October 27, 2026

This DIY home selling guide offers four practical ways to prepare your home before listing it in Huntsville and North Alabama. Start with manageable projects that help buyers see the space clearly, then decide which additional improvements make sense for your home, budget and timeline.

You do not need to renovate every room before selling. Before spending money on major projects, talk with Glenn and Jodi about your home’s condition and the improvements that may matter most to buyers in your market.

1. Declutter Your Main Living Spaces

After living in a home for several years, it is easy to accumulate belongings without noticing how much space they occupy. Clearing unnecessary items helps buyers see the room’s layout, walking paths and usable space.

Start with kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, bedrooms and main living areas. Pack away items you rarely use, reduce crowded displays and remove excess furniture where it blocks movement.

You can also put away personal photographs, valuables, medications and sensitive documents before photography and showings. The goal is to create a tidy, comfortable space while protecting your privacy.

2. Freshen Up Paint Where Needed

Scuffed walls, chipped trim and normal wear can make a room look less maintained than it is. Cleaning painted surfaces and addressing small cosmetic concerns may help improve its presentation.

If you have matching paint, test a small area before doing touch-ups. Older paint can fade, and a fresh patch may stand out even when it came from the original container. In some cases, painting an entire wall produces a more consistent result.

If repainting is worthwhile, consider colors that work with the home’s lighting, flooring and finishes. There is no need to repaint every room simply because you are selling.

Investigate stains, moisture damage or other underlying problems before painting. Cosmetic work should not conceal an unresolved issue. Use qualified professionals when a project involves hazardous materials, electrical work or repairs beyond your experience.

3. Organize Closets and Storage Areas

Buyers may look inside closets and cabinets to understand how much usable storage the home offers. Organizing those areas makes their layout easier to see.

Pack seasonal clothing, duplicate household items and belongings you will not need before moving. Keep shelves orderly and avoid overfilling hanging areas. You do not need to remove a fixed percentage of your belongings; focus on making each space accessible and easy to evaluate.

If you store packed boxes in the garage, stack them securely and leave clear access to doors, electrical panels, equipment and other areas that may need to be inspected. Consider off-site storage if boxes make important spaces difficult to access.

4. Tidy the Exterior and Entryway

The approach to your home is part of a buyer’s first impression. Start with basic upkeep: mow when appropriate, remove debris, tidy planting beds and trim vegetation that blocks walkways or the entrance.

Put away hoses, toys and outdoor equipment. Sweep the porch, clean the front door and make sure the entrance is easy to reach. Simple seasonal plants may add a welcoming touch without requiring a major landscaping project.

Check exterior lighting and address visible maintenance concerns. Choose cleaning methods suitable for the surface, and hire help for work that requires ladders, specialized equipment or skills you do not have.

Choose Your Projects Before Spending

These steps can improve how your home presents, but they do not guarantee a particular sale price or time on the market. Pricing, condition, location, competition and buyer demand also affect the outcome.

Make a list of possible projects, estimate the time and cost, and prioritize what is practical before photography and showings. A preparation plan can help you avoid rushing into unnecessary work.
