A practical Rocket City relocation guide

Preparing for a Move to Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal

A U.S. Space Command-related move may bring questions about Redstone Arsenal access, commuting, schools, housing and how the Huntsville–Madison area fits together.

This guide is designed for active-duty service members, federal civilian employees, contractors and families considering a move to North Alabama.

The best place to live is not determined by a single map pin. Your work location on Redstone Arsenal, expected gate, school needs, budget, preferred setting and tolerance for traffic should all be considered before narrowing your search.

Current transition overview

What Is Moving to Redstone Arsenal?

Redstone Arsenal has been designated as the permanent headquarters location for U.S. Space Command. The transition is occurring in stages while facilities, infrastructure and operational requirements are developed.

1

Transition planning

A Redstone Transition Team was established at Redstone Arsenal in late 2025 to prepare facilities and coordinate the headquarters transition.

2

Initial operations

In April 2026, the Joint Intelligence Support Element became the first operational U.S. Space Command group to transition to Redstone Arsenal.

3

Gradual growth

The City of Huntsville has discussed approximately 1,400 positions transitioning over about five years, while noting that some positions may be filled from the region’s existing workforce.

Planning note: Headquarters schedules, staffing levels and individual reporting locations may change. Confirm employment and reporting details through your command, agency or employer before making a housing decision.

Commute planning

Redstone Arsenal Gates and Daily Travel

Redstone Arsenal is a large federal installation with several access points. Gate 9 on Rideout Road is currently identified by Redstone Arsenal as the main gate and is open 24 hours a day. Other gates have more limited schedules that may vary by day, direction of travel, federal holidays or operational needs.

A home that looks close on a map may not provide the easiest trip to your actual work location. Gate queues, school traffic, construction, time of day and your destination on the Arsenal can all affect the commute.

  • Confirm your anticipated duty or work location.
  • Ask which gate is commonly used for that location and schedule.
  • Test the route during realistic morning and afternoon periods.
  • Keep alternate gate schedules and holiday closures in mind.
  • Avoid choosing a home based on mileage alone.
Always verify gate information: Check Redstone Arsenal’s official gate and access-control page before relying on a particular entrance or schedule.

Help Me Compare Communities

Family and financial planning

Schools, VA Loans and Housing Decisions

Verify school zoning directly

A mailing address, city name or listing description does not always identify the correct school system or attendance zone. Nearby homes may be assigned to different districts.

Verify the specific property address directly with the applicable school district before making an offer or signing a lease. Do not rely solely on an MLS listing or third-party website.

VA loans and military moves

VA financing can be an excellent option for eligible service members and veterans. The right strategy depends on entitlement, occupancy plans, property condition, appraisal requirements and timing.

Glenn and Jodi can coordinate with a knowledgeable VA lender and help structure the home search around your reporting date.

Renting versus buying

Renting may make sense when your assignment length, reporting location or family plans remain uncertain.

Buying may be worth considering when you expect to remain in the area, understand the total monthly costs and find a home that meets both current needs and likely resale demand.

Buying remotely

Glenn and Jodi can provide live video tours, neighborhood context and close-up views that go beyond listing photography.

They can also help coordinate inspections, repair discussions, appraisal access and closing logistics while clearly explaining what can and cannot be evaluated remotely.

Make your visit useful

Planning a House-Hunting Trip

A focused visit should help you understand the area, not simply rush you through a long list of houses.

  • Share your anticipated worksite and report date.
  • Identify two or three community directions to compare.
  • Drive likely commute routes during realistic travel periods.
  • Visit groceries, parks, medical services and daily destinations.
  • Tour a representative mix of resale and new-construction homes.
  • Leave time to revisit the strongest area or property.
