PCS’ing to Huntsville | Redstone Arsenal
Updated October 27, 2026
PCS’ing to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama? We know how much there is to juggle when you’re moving to an unfamiliar area—orders, schools, housing, schedules, and all those details that somehow have to come together at once. We’re a military family ourselves, and we’d love to help make the home-search part a little easier.
We made a video for military families moving to the area. It’s an older video, but the idea behind it still matters: you can learn a lot about a home and a neighborhood before you arrive in Huntsville.
Start With the Area, Not Just the House
When you’re PCS’ing, the time you have to look for housing can feel impossibly short. And when you don’t know the area yet, choosing where to live can be just as challenging as choosing a house.
Some families want a shorter commute to Redstone Arsenal. Others prefer Madison, a neighborhood closer to downtown Huntsville, or somewhere with more land. Your priorities might include schools, a one-story floor plan, room for pets, or simply a place where you can settle in and feel at home. There is not one right answer for every family. Verify school assignments and enrollment requirements directly with the appropriate school system for each property you consider.
Moving to Redstone Arsenal? Before choosing a neighborhood, consider your likely gate and work schedule, commute at the hours you’ll actually travel, housing budget, school needs, and whether buying or renting makes sense for the time you expect to stay.
Redstone Arsenal also has an official newcomer resource page, including housing-assistance information for incoming military and civilian personnel.
Should You Buy or Rent During Your PCS?
It’s tempting to think buying is always better than renting, especially if you’ve owned a home before. But a military move comes with its own timetable. How long might you be stationed here? What could it cost to sell if you receive orders sooner than expected? Would renting give you more flexibility while you get to know the area?
Buying can be the right choice for some families, and renting can be the smarter choice for others. Home values can rise or fall, and a quick resale is never guaranteed to produce a profit. We’ll help you think through the housing options without pressuring you into a decision.
Get a Head Start on Financing
If you’re thinking about buying, one of the first steps is talking with a lender and understanding your price range. If you’re eligible for a VA-backed home loan, ask about the Certificate of Eligibility, loan terms, closing costs, and whether a VA funding fee applies to your situation. Some eligible borrowers are exempt from that fee. Your lender must also evaluate credit, income, entitlement, occupancy requirements and the property; a Certificate of Eligibility is not final loan approval.
VA loans can offer a no-down-payment option for eligible buyers, but that doesn’t mean every purchase is free of upfront expenses. Compare lenders and review the full estimated monthly payment and closing costs before making a decision. You can read the VA’s home-buying guidance and funding-fee information for details.
We can also point you toward our local lender resources and buyer resources as you plan your move.
Tell Us What Matters to Your Family
We like to begin with a real conversation. What do you want in a home? What’s your preferred commute? Are you looking for a particular layout or price range? What does your family need to feel comfortable in a new community?
With that information, we can help narrow the search to homes that fit your priorities and are actually available. You can review photos, property details, and neighborhood locations from wherever you’re stationed—without trying to sort through every listing in North Alabama.

See Homes Before You Arrive
Photos can be helpful, but they don’t tell you everything. If you’re out of state and a home looks promising, we can discuss whether a live or recorded video tour would help you decide if it’s worth a closer look. We can point out things that might not show up in listing photos—room flow, visible wear, nearby traffic, or other details we notice in person.
We’ve helped relocating buyers evaluate homes from a distance, but we also encourage careful due diligence. Video is a useful starting point, not a substitute for an independent inspection, appraisal, or any in-person visit you can arrange.
We’ll Help You Navigate the Buying Process
Once you find the right home, there’s still plenty to coordinate: an offer, contract deadlines, inspections, financing, appraisal, title work, and closing. We’ll help you understand the steps, communicate with the other parties, and keep track of what needs attention while you’re handling your move.
Many documents can be reviewed and signed electronically. Some inspection and closing arrangements can also be coordinated while you’re out of state, depending on the lender, title company, and applicable requirements. We’ll work through those details early rather than assume every closing can be done remotely.

Plan for Closing Day
If possible, it’s helpful to know your travel and reporting dates before choosing a closing date. An in-person closing may be simplest, but alternative arrangements may be available. Your lender and closing attorney can explain whether a power of attorney, remote signing, or another process is appropriate for your transaction.
We won’t promise a particular closing method until the professionals handling your loan and closing have confirmed it. The earlier we make a plan, the fewer last-minute surprises you’re likely to face.
