Moving for Space Command from Colorado Springs to Huntsville, Alabama? Relocating means more than finding a house. Your work location, commute, housing budget and everyday routine all deserve attention before you choose where to live.
U.S. Space Command is transitioning its headquarters to Redstone Arsenal. The command announced operational control of a Redstone facility in April 2026 as part of that transition. Your individual reporting location and move date should come from your employer or official orders. Follow official Space Command updates rather than assuming every employee is moving on the same schedule.

Weather: A Different Kind of Four Seasons
Compared with Colorado Springs, Huntsville brings a more humid climate and a much lower elevation. Expect hot, humid summers, rain throughout the year and winter cold snaps. Snow and ice are possible, and their frequency and duration vary from year to year.
Plan for thunderstorms and severe-weather alerts as well as heat when arranging outdoor activities. Mild winter afternoons can make outdoor time possible, but there is no guarantee of golf weather or snow melting within a day. Compare Your Actual Cost of Living
A citywide percentage or median home price cannot tell you what your household will spend. Housing comparisons depend on the date, geographic area, property type and whether the figure describes asking prices or completed sales.
- Housing: Compare homes that fit your actual needs, including size, condition, lot and commute. Use current listings and recent comparable sales.
- Monthly ownership costs: Obtain property-specific estimates for taxes, homeowners insurance, mortgage insurance and HOA dues. Add utilities, maintenance and any costs associated with selling or moving.
- Financing: Compare current loan terms and cash needed to close. A lower purchase price does not automatically produce the same monthly payment or a larger home within your budget.
- Relocation benefits: Confirm what your employer will cover and any deadlines or conditions before making commitments.

A Familiar Aerospace and Defense Setting
Redstone Arsenal brings together military and federal organizations. The local federal presence includes NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Army Materiel Command, the Missile Defense Agency and the FBI. The FBI’s Redstone overview describes this setting.
For a spouse or household member seeking employment, research specific openings, qualifications, clearance requirements and work locations. An aerospace and defense presence does not guarantee an equivalent position, salary or commute to the one you have in Colorado.
Life Outside the Office
Huntsville offers a different landscape from the Rockies, with wooded trails, parks and access to waterways around North Alabama. Consider Monte Sano State Park for an outdoor outing, and check current access and conditions before planning a river trip.
For sports, you can look into Rocket City Trash Pandas baseball in Madison, Huntsville Havoc hockey and Huntsville City FC soccer. Check each team’s current schedule when planning a visit. Regional trips are also possible, but driving times depend on your starting point, route and traffic.
Where Should You Live?
Start with your confirmed work address and the Redstone gate you expect to use. Test routes during the hours you would actually travel. A nearby home on a map may involve a different drive than you expect.
- Madison: Compare neighborhoods, housing options and routes to your workplace. Verify city limits and school assignments for each property.
- Hampton Cove: Compare housing and outdoor surroundings alongside the route to your expected work location.
- Harvest and Monrovia: Explore these separately; housing, services and drive times vary by address.
- South Huntsville: Consider the location of specific neighborhoods relative to your workplace and preferred daily activities.
