Historic Huntsville Depot — Check Access Before Visiting
The Historic Huntsville Depot is an important railroad landmark rather than a regularly operating indoor museum at this time. The local visitors bureau lists the grounds as open but says museum tours are not being conducted. The City is planning the property’s future and evaluating maintenance and preservation needs. Confirm current access before visiting; do not expect indoor museum tours or train rides here.
Weeden House Museum and Garden
Built in 1819, the Weeden House Museum and Garden at 300 Gates Avenue offers a look at Huntsville’s 19th-century architecture and history. The preserved home features historic rooms and stories of the people who lived there. Contact the museum to confirm tour arrangements before your visit.
North Alabama Railroad Museum
Located in the Chase community northeast of downtown Huntsville, the North Alabama Railroad Museum preserves historic railroad equipment and the Chase Depot. Visitors can take a self-guided walking tour, and scheduled excursions operate on the museum’s Mercury & Chase Railroad. Train rides are offered on selected dates, so check the current schedule and purchase tickets in advance.
Alabama Constitution Hall Park
Step back into Huntsville in 1819 and learn about the constitutional convention that helped establish Alabama as a state. Guided tours explore historic trades and everyday life through spaces such as a cabinet shop, blacksmith shop, printing shop, and home. The park currently advertises a March-through-December tour season, with tours on selected days. Check the official booking calendar for availability.
U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum
Located in John Hunt Park, the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum displays military vehicles, aircraft, artifacts, and memorabilia spanning the Revolutionary War to the present. A highlight is the 1940 Ford Pygmy, which the museum identifies as the world’s oldest known surviving utility Jeep prototype. Check the museum’s website for current visitor information.
Cook Museum of Natural Science — Decatur
For a nearby day trip, visit the Cook Museum of Natural Science in downtown Decatur. Hands-on exhibits explore animals, insects, habitats, geology, and other wonders of the natural world. Live animals and interactive activities give families plenty to discover. The museum currently lists Sunday closures, so check its visitor information before heading over.
